5 Things to Consider When Chanting for a Goal (2)
President Ikeda, author of many books on Buddhism and the leader of the Nichiren Buddhist movement for 60 years, points out in his Clear Mirror Guidance, the universe acts as a mirror, when we are chanting for a goal, and reflects our state of mind back to us.
Let’s look at some states of mind we might be projecting to the universe and ask ourselves.
Am I chanting as a Buddha or a beggar?
If you are confronting a difficult challenge, the temptation is to chant as a beggar, please let me keep my house, please let me…. Chanting as a beggar sets you up as being weak, depending on an outside force to solve the problem. You hope but don’t really believe that the solution to the problem lies within your hands.
In fact, you have the Buddha nature within. This means you are connected to universal energy and intelligence and can bring them out to tackle anything which might come up. When you chant based on the Mystic Law of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, (link) you tap into everything you need to resolve any challenge.
So chant as a Buddha with the absolute determination that this end result will come about. See the desired end result clearly in your mind. Let the universe know that you are resolved to do anything necessary to bring it to fruition.
Am I focusing on the end goal or on the obstacles to reaching it?
When you focus on the obstacles you are projecting them to the universe and they will be reflected back to you. Keep your attention on the end you want and let the positive forces in the universe work out the path to get there.
You will never be deadlocked if you base everything on the Mystic Law of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo. You will discover ways around obstacles or they may just disappear. As a matter of fact it’s a great adventure to see how the steps to your goal work out. Completely unexpected twists and turns can occur.
Am I trying to force my goal?
You don’t have to force anything. Just let your attention be on your goal when you sit down to chant and then let go. Chanting for a goal is an interesting balance between being in charge and letting go. You are in charge when you set the direction you want – the end goal. You let go when you relax and let the positive forces in the universe work out the path. Trying to force a goal doesn’t let that behind the scenes activity work in the way it should.
Am I strategizing or chanting with the end in mind?
Most of us have been taught that we have to have a plan. But in Nichiren Buddhism that is putting the cart before the horse. When you chant with the end goal in mind first, then ideas, people and circumstances will come to you to work out your goal. You don’t need to work out a plan all by yourself.
Am I chanting with desperation or gratitude?
When you chant with desperation, you are letting the universe now that you don’t believe this goal can be achieved. You may be focusing on the obstacles rather than the end result.
When you chant with gratitude you have relaxed, letting the universe know that you absolutely believe this goal is going to come about.
These five considerations can make the difference between chanting like a Buddha and achieving a goal or struggling with disbelief and mixed results. Give it a try and see.

Hyper specific: I will be hired at this design firm on July 14 and wear this outfit on my first day. Or a general feeling: I’d like to become less judgmental. Goals are amazing. They are a picture of the future we want that we paint with our hearts and minds. Here are four ideas on making goals and achieving them. 1. Write Your Goals Down and Chant Buddhism teaches that you are the screenwriter of your life. Neither chance nor external forces write the script for us; we do. If our life is like a movie, then writing down our goals is how we write the script. Dr. Gail Matthews did a study of 267 people and divided them into two groups: people who wrote down their goals and people who didn’t. The study showed the people who wrote down their goals were 42% likelier to achieve them.
A dream is something you work for each day, even when you don’t feel like it.
It’s also good not to just write down our goals once, but to copy them again and again so we engrave them in our hearts. As Buddhists, we can also focus on our goals as we chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo. Not only does this help to reaffirm our goals each day, but chanting enables us to defeat the negativity and doubt around our goals. 2. Do Something Each Day What’s the difference between a dream and a fantasy? A dream is something you work for each day, even when you don’t feel like it. Behind Maya Angelou’s stunning poetry are the tenacious efforts we don’t see. In Daily Rituals, she describes her writing routine as waking up at 5:30 a.m. and starting to write by 7 a.m. each day. Even when it’s going badly. Sometimes she works so hard that it causes strange physical reactions in her body—her knees swell up, her back goes out or her eyelids swell to the point that she can’t see.
Buddhism teaches that wisdom and ingenuity come from effort. That success is just another name for repeated, tenacious effort. Though it can feel impossible to keep up, each of us is capable of it when we chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo and tap into our Buddhability. 3. Small Goals Add Up to Big Ones Within each big goal are many smaller, daily goals. Buddhist philosopher Daisaku Ikeda writes:
Small things matter. Right or wrong, small things accumulate and lead to a major difference in the results. That’s why the best way to achieve your important future goals is to pay careful attention to your minor daily challenges and triumph in each one of them. Nichiren Daishonin writes, ‘If a person cannot manage to cross a moat ten feet wide, how can he cross one that is a hundred or two hundred feet?’ Small challenges, small successes, repeated again and again, become great victories and flower into a life of glorious success. 4. Keep Going No Matter What Hitting a wall is actually proof we are truly challenging ourselves. Even if we don’t hit the goals on our timeline, the fact that we are disappointed means we truly care and are moving in the right direction. Some notable people actually set “rejection goals” to go along with their big goals. The thinking: If you receive 100 rejections in a year, then it means you’ve truly tried and are making progress. What’s the worst mistake we can make? It is to give up.

The chant
Nam Myoho Renge Kyo is the sound and rhythm of the universe and elucidates the workings of life, its magnificence, wonder and splendour. The letter ‘Nam’ which means respect or devotion has its root in Sanskrit. ‘Myo’ literally means ‘mystic’ as it talks about concealed, dormant, and limitless potential that exists in every life. ‘Ho’ on the other hand refers to tangible, manifest and visible aspects of life. Together ‘myoho’ describe the unending and eternal cycle of life and death. While Myo corresponds to the latent period that life undergoes before birth and after death; ‘ho’ is linked with the manifest aspect of life right from the origin, through birth, development, ripening, degeneration and death before life again enters into the latent state and blends with the universe.
Renge means lotus flower which is immaculate and sweet-scented, unblemished by the murky water in which it blooms. Likewise, humans too can bring forth the exquisiteness and dignity of their lives amidst day-to-day challenges. Also, Lotus is the only flower that blooms and produces seeds at the same time, which demonstrates the principle of the simultaneity of cause and effect. Kyo literally means sutra and indicates that all phenomena are indicators of the Mystic Law.
