I’m getting black screen (blank screen) when I open GRO Connect?

Now you can try opening the app. If none of the above working, you can wait till your phone battery drains and it turns off automatically. After that put it to charge, and press the power button. It may work after this. Finally, if you can’t fix it with anything, you may need to uninstall the app and re-install it. Android usually restores all settings after you re-install and log into the app. You can see if that fixes it. Even in some rare cases, the re-install step also don’t work. Are you able to connect to Spruce-XXXX and proceed by pressing next? Try pressing the next button again, sometimes there is a short delay after connecting Try turning airplane mode on, and then turning Wifi on and connecting to Spruce-XXXX

Switching your phone to airplane mode before switching on Wifi will often resolve connection and verify issues

Step 3 – Select the WiFi Access Point

A list of Wifi access points including your router SSID will show up after scanning for networks, then the corresponding password can be entered and sent to the Spruce controller to initiate the connection process

Is a list of access points displayed? Try pressing the “Scan” button again Ensure you are connected in Step 2

Is the access point you want to connect to visible? The Access Point must be 2.4GHz Is the Access Point in range, typically less than 50 feet away

The controller only connects to 2.4GHz, not 5GHz. Some newer routers have both – only the 2.4GHz will show up in the network list. The password used for the 5GHz might not be the same as the 2.4GHz that is required for the controller

Was the password submitted? When the password is not sent, the communication has often been lost, restart the process and try the airplane mode method

Did the controller flash green and then switch to fading blue? The green flashing is very short, as long as the controller is fading blue, it is ok. If it is not fading blue and went back to flashing dark blue, the connection failed and is most likely due to an incorrect password

Step 4 – Verify the Connection

The final step to verify the controller is connected to Wifi and the Spruce cloud

The Growlink works best with a traditional home network: simple networks with WPA/WPA2 or WEP security (or unsecured), with a single router from a reputable company (Apple, Netgear, Linksys, D-Link, etc.) without any fancy settings. The more your network diverges from the norm, there more likely you might encounter issues.

There are known issues with the following types of networks:

So, let’s dig in. If your Growlink is not connecting to your Wi-Fi network, we recommend following these steps:

STEP 0: Check the basics

Check your Wi-Fi credentials (SSID and password) to make sure you typed them correctly.

Make sure you’re in range of your Wi-Fi network. If your phone or computer has a poor connection in the same location, try moving closer to your Wi-Fi access point.

If you’re using a u.FL antenna, make sure you have an antenna attached, and that it’s firmly connected.

Make sure your Growlink has enough power to transmit Wi-Fi signals (300mA in bursts). Try a different power source, or unplug components that draw a lot of power.

STEP 1: Try another network

There are many reasons that your Growlink might not connect; some of them have to do with the Growlink; some have to do with your mobile device sending the Wi-Fi credentials; some have to do with the network. If your Growlink doesn’t connect, try another Wi-Fi network. This will quickly help you figure out which type of issue you might be seeing.

So often, electronics start behaving after you shut them off and turn them back on. Try:

The only change you may need to make to your router is to open up outgoing port 5683, the default CoAPport the Growlink uses to connect to the Growlink Device Cloud. If your Growlink flashes cyan and occasionally flashes red, router issues are likely the culprit.
