Usually, most restaurants which are full-service in a mall tend to be more expensive, but my curiosities as to whether the food was good brought me here. The crowds of happy children with jajangmyun sauce and families, along with a broad representation of families here assures me that it’d be a safe bet to come inside.
1. Where is Mandarin House?: Mandarin House is on the first level of Koreatown Plaza in Suite 147. It is located inside this Koreatown Los Angeles pioneering flagship shopping mall, and happens to celebrate its 30th anniversary this year. You’ll find it steps from Plaza Market. Under new management, I came here with a friend to try whether this hwagyo (Chinese Korean) restaurant was worth the visit. The ambiance is relatively clean, with pleather banquettes, red and black painted surfaces (representative of Korean Chinese restaurants back in Korea) all over the restaurant. Tables as well as banquettes are large, and clean.

2. Hwagyo trinity: a hwagyo restaurant’s quality should be measured by the quality, quantity, value, presentation and taste in the three hwagyo mainstays. These would be jajangmyun (black bean sauce with noodles), jampbong (spicy seafood stew with noodles) and gamponggi (garlic fried chicken). Since my friend and I weren’t too hungry, we went for the jajangmyun (JJM) and tangsuyuk.

* JJM (gahn jajang style) came out with slivers of cucumber garnish freshly glistening on top of a vividly dark brown, well-seasoned sauce. The noodles were well-prepared, and plentiful. This JJM had plenty of seafood, shrimp and others swimming in a overly generous bowl. The servers were prompt, and came over without our asking to cut our noodles before we mixed them. The sauce was well-balanced, not too oily and had a rich flavor. Four Stars for the JJM here, as the texture of the sauce complements the just al dente bite of the plentiful noodles.

* Tangsuyuk: this pan-fried beef is lightly battered and sauteed, with your choice of the sweet and sour sauce and vegetables on the side or with them. The sauce here was not cloyingly sweet, although I was surprised to see pineapple chunks on the platter. If you come here, the tangsukyuk and the amount they give you is enormous! My friend says that the amount of food they give you on a given day will vary, depending on the generous hand of whoever happens to be in the kitchen as the chef when you dine there. Apparently, this was a good day–as I couldn’t believe how much tangsukyuk we got for the $9 we paid. A very good value for the price, and I recommend you get it.

* Jambbong and gambonggi: I did not order these, since my friend advised that Mandarin doesn’t do as well in these two dishes here. I trust his judgment, so I didn’t order these.

3. Quality customer service a Yelp Star: the servers and the bussing crew is very efficient here, as they replaced our hot tea, kimchi and pickled radish and onions without our prompting. The bussing crew even brought me chopsticks, when I noticed I didn’t have one and I was about to ask. They are efficient, and promptly clean up after diners leave–rather than leaving the dirty dishes out there, and table turnover is quick. The servers here are a cut above the service I’ve received at Chinese Chinese restaurants, and I would come back again.

4. Mandarin House is worth a visit!: if you happen to be in Koreatown Plaza on your next visit to Ktown or happen to be driving by on Vermont and wanting JJM, this place is worth a stop. It is definitely much better than the hwagyo restaurants I’ve been to the San Francisco Bay Area, although San Tung is better than Mandarin House. In the book of Koreatown dining though in hwagyo, Mandarin is definitely steps ahead of Dragon on Vermont for good JJM.

1. Where is Mandarin House?: Mandarin House is on the first level of Koreatown Plaza in Suite 147. It is located inside this Koreatown Los Angeles pioneering flagship shopping mall, and happens to celebrate its 30th anniversary this year. You’ll find it steps from Plaza Market. Under new management, I came here with a friend to try whether this hwagyo (Chinese Korean) restaurant was worth the visit.
