Scuba Sewickley YMCA
You are about to embark on one of the world’s most exciting sports! Here is the class schedule and other information. Class is tentively scheduled meet Sun Dec 18 from 2:30-5:30 the evenings of Dec 20, 22, 27, & 29, from 6:30 to 9:30 PM. However we can modify the schedule to accomocate the students. We will meet in the conference room in street clothes before going to the pool. Contact us to get your home study materials and prepare Chapter One before the first class. During the first session you will have your photo taken for your certification card, complete some forms, and review chapter one before heading to the pool for your first scuba dive. Each subsequent class will begin with a review of the current chapter and a short quiz before heading to the pool. Bring a swimsuit, towel, and padlock for your locker. We will supply all your scuba equipment. It’s very important that you attend all classes, as they must be completed in order. We have some flexibility in scheduling, but if you miss a session, the remaining classes may be taken at one of our other locations at no additional charge or you may take a private make-up classes at $20/hour. We recommend that you download and complete the medical form before the first class. If you answer “Yes” to any of the ailments you will need an physician’s signature before participating in any pool sessions. Please bring this form with you to the first class. After completing classroom and pool sessions, you will need to do four open water training dives scheduled over 2 days. These dives can be scheduled at a local lake most weekends thourghout the summer. You also have the option to get a referral to do your dives at another time and place, such as on your next tropical vacation. After you have completed your four open water dives, you will be certified as a PADI Open Water Scuba Diver. Costs: ( Purchase only what you need, Family members may share study materials) Classroom & pool training $160 mem, $190 Non-mem (Paid to the Y) Home study packet with log book $60 + $30 refundable deposit on video (Paid to Downey Diving) Scuba Equipment for Pool use Included in course fee Open water dives & certification: $80 (paid to instructor, if needed, before open water dives) Open water equipment rental: $95 (paid to dive store, if needed, before open water dives) To register call 412 741-9622, Questions call the instructor at 724 869-1989 Directions From I-79: From Exit 68(Mt Nebo) Take Blackburn Rd 4 miles to Sewickley. 2022-2023 SEWICKLEY SEA DRAGONS SWIM TEAM
Our goal is to inspire a life-long love of swimming, while emphasizing the Y’s core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility. Our practices are set up by age group. We feel it is important for kids to be with their peers. Within the age groups we set up training groups based on their ability. We put great focus on technique with the belief that with good technique, speed will follow.
FALL/WINTER SEASON
SWIM TEAM SEASON runs October 3 – their last meet, (typically February). Championship season for qualifying swimmers is in March – Silver Champs, Districts and States. Practice schedule will be adjusted for March. Novice Championships, (8 & under), are in February.
NEW SWIMMER EVALUATIONS will be held on Monday, September 12, and Wednesday, September 21, at 6 pm.
INFORMATIONAL PARENT REGISTRATION MEETINGS are Wednesday, September 14, and Monday, September 26, 6-6:45 pm at the Community Activity Center, (building in upper lot). Registration is only available by attending a parent meeting.
SWIM SUIT TRY-ON AND SALE will be October 4, 5-6:30 pm. We will have a limited number of items for sale at the event. Team suits and other items are available on our Team Unify site. TRAINING GROUPS and PRACTICE DAYS/TIMES
NEW NOVICE, 6-8 – practice M/W/F, 5-5:40 pm. Participants will learn correct butterfly and breaststroke and fundamentals of competitive swimming. Recommend 2-3 practice days a week. $275
ADVANCED NOVICE, 7-8 – practice M/W/F, 5:45-6:30 pm. Participants will continue to focus on technique and will learn flip and open turns for the 50 free and 100 IM. Recommend 2-3 practice days a week. $275
CADET, 9-10 – practice M/W/F, 5-6 pm, and beginning Nov 3, we will offer practice on Thursdays, 5-6 pm. Swimmers will continue to focus on technique of all 4 competitive strokes as well as open and flip turns. Recommend 3-4 practice days a week. $385
PREP, JUNIOR & SENIOR, 11-18 – practice Mondays & Wednesdays, 6-7:30 pm, Tuesdays, 6:30-8 pm and Fridays, 6-7 pm. Beginning 11/3, Thursday practice will be 5:30-7 pm, including dry-land from 5:30-6 pm. Continued emphasis on stroke technique, increased endurance, and leadership. $430
HIGH SCHOOL – follows the Prep, Jr, Sr practice schedule until HS season begins. Great opportunity to get a jump on the season. Swimmers can attend meets throughout the season. Participation in 3, Y meets are required to be eligible for Districts and States. $120
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS FOR SWIM TEAM
Coaches will review new swimmer’s strokes to insure they are ready for swim team and for proper placement in the program.
New Novice, 6-8 – can swim one length of freestyle with side breathing, and backstroke in good form. Equivalent swim lessons completed is Stage 4, Stroke Introduction.
Advanced Novice, 7-8 – same as new novice with the addition of proficiency in butterfly and breaststroke. Equivalent swim lessons completed is Stage 5, Stroke Development. Coach must approve placement in this group.
9-10 – can swim 50 yards of freestye with side breathing, and backstroke in good form. They should be able to swim at least 25 yards of breast and fly. Equivalent swim lessons completed is Stage 5, Stroke Development.
11 & Up – are proficient in all 4 competitive strokes and can swim 100 yards of front crawl and backstroke, and 50 yards of breast and fly. Equivalent swim lessons completed is Stage 5, Stroke Development or Stage 6, Stroke Mechanics.
