4 Ways to Make Fruit Infused Tea

Are you looking for a way to jazz up your next cup of tea with homemade tea recipes? These fruit-infused tea recipes will hit the spot! Homemade Tea Recipes

Sun Tea

When brewing tea using the “sun tea” method, cold water and tea bags are added to a glass jar and left in the sun to steep, you can choose any tea you want. To make fruit-infused sun tea, add two tea bags and ½ cup of fresh, chopped fruit to a one-quart Mason jar. Fill to the top with cold water, cover, and leave out in the sun for about two hours, or until steeped to your taste. One of the problems with sun tea is that it’s easy for bacteria to grow while the tea is in the sun. To prevent this, you can sterilize the container first.

Black Tea

Black tea has a strong flavor, which is why infusing fruit with the tea can help make it taste great! Choose fruit that is sweet and has a more robust flavor, such as oranges, watermelon, and raspberries. To make, add one black tea bag and half a cup of fruit pieces into a one-quart Mason jar. Fill to the top with boiling water and steep for three minutes. Remove the tea bags, cover, and let the fruit steep for another ten minutes. Strain and serve hot or over ice.

Green Tea

• Chamomile tea blends well with apples, raspberries, mangoes, oranges.

• Peppermint tastes excellent with fruit such as pineapples, oranges, and mangoes.

• Spearmint infuses well with lemons, limes, and grapefruit.

• Rosehip herbal tea blends well with strawberries, oranges, and apples.

Review | Yi Fang Taiwan Fruit & Bubble Tea

I love the story behind this tea shop, it’s named after the founder’s Grandmother who used to make traditional Taiwanese fruit tea for her husband mixed with her secret recipe homegrown/made pineapple jam and slices of fresh fruit. That was the inspiration, but the shop also sells a variety of other traditional and innovative teas.

I got 5 flavours in total which I shared with a friend – we thought it would be fun to do a little taste test and ranking.

Yi Fang Fruit Tea

Description: Traditional fruit tea made with Fresh Fruit slices Apple, Orange, Passion Fruit, and Pineapple Jam & Ching Tea. We hand braise fruit jam with our secret recipe handed down from the founder’s grandmother herself.

My Thoughts:

I had many regrets with just one sip. Firstly, 50% sugar level was way too sweet without ice, like so sickly sweet that it was a bit difficult to drink. I think because I wanted no ice, I should have opted for 0% sugar for a more natural juice and pineapple jam taste. I could feel the textured pineapple jam but the whole drink in general tasted like overly sweet passion fruit juice to me, and I definitely could not taste any tea flavour. The passion fruit seeds were crunchy and kind of annoying too. I didn’t eat the fresh cut fruit that was in the drink as I’m allergic to them but visually I could tell that it was fresh and probably tastes great. I think if I added grass jelly or tapioca pearls as a topping it could have given the drink a bit of a balance in flavour and texture.

Luckily my friend had some ice at her house, so we transferred the into glasses and added ice which did help to water it down a bit and give a more refreshing feel, but it still tasted like sweet passion fruit juice. In general, I wouldn’t get this one again and I advise anyone who wants to try it to definitely go for 30-0% sugar and lots of ice.

Mudflip Milk Tea

Description: Brown Sugar Pearls with Milk Tea. YiFang’s signature drink “Mudflip” is our take on the popular “Bubble Milk Tea”. Every day, all our staff cook the tapioca pearls with our special brown sugar – thicker and aromatic! Customers are advised to flip their drinks to ensure that the brown sugar, pearls, milk and black tea are well-mixed. This created a wonderful mesmerising ‘mud-like effect’ similar to a lava lamp. The unusual creamy treacle-like flavour is truly unforgettable.

My Thoughts:

This is the one I was looking forward to trying the most. I previously tried something similar at The Alley but that one didn’t have tea in it, so when I saw that Yi Fang do a milk tea version rather than just milk I had to try it! One of the reasons for why people buy this particular drink is because as the name suggests, you flip the cup to create a visual effect of beautiful syrupy streaks, but in all honesty the flip was very anti-climactic and it probably would have looked prettier if they just poured the syrup on the inside walls of the cup themselves like they do at The Alley and some other places. That being said, I’ve seen other people do it successfully on instagram so maybe my flip technique was wrong.

Anyway I guess the whole “flip” thing isn’t as important as the flavour, and boy was I impressed with the flavour! It had that same delicious caramel brown sugar syrup taste as what I liked at The Alley but much sweeter because Yi Fang are seriously generous with their toppings, I mean almost half of the cup was brown sugar syrup tapioca pearls. Regardless of how sweet it was, what made this superior was the taste of tea, the fact that I could actually taste the tea had me smiling, and the tea flavour slightly balanced the sweetness anyway which was good. I most definitely will be buying this one again sometime whenever I’m in the mood.

Fresh Milk Tea with Grass Jelly

My Thoughts:

I’m pretty basic so I’m just going to put it out there that this was my favourite drink out of the 5 I purchased. I usually go for Milk Tea with Grass Jelly at every bubble tea shop, one of my favourite places being a shop called CoCo Fresh, but I think I’ve found a new love because the Milk Tea at Yi Fang has a much deeper Tea flavour in comparison (it’s a darker coloured tea too) and again they are really generous with the amount of topping they give (grass jelly in this case). The only mistake I made was getting 50% sugar level as it was too sweet for me so next time I’ll go for 30% instead. This one wasn’t as sweet as the Fruit Tea and Mudflip Milk Tea though, which I was happy about.

This drink was requested by my friend, as she usually orders it at another shop called T4. She usually adds tapioca pearls to it but in the midst of crazy hot weather and an unusually long order, I completely forgot to add them.

I was really pleasantly surprised with this drink. It was quite sweet but really delicious. I didn’t know the flavour description before trying it and they really hit the nail on the head as it does indeed taste like a caramel/toffee popcorn which I guess is the natural flavour of Winter Melon. I actually liked it so much that during the taste test, I went back to it at least a few times more than the others and every sip helped me understand and like the flavour more. I see how this can taste better with pearls for texture and some ice to balance out the sweetness, so I’ll keep it in mind for next time. It’s not my favourite drink but I did enjoy it a lot so will get it again when I’m in the mood.

My Thoughts:

This was essentially a traditional Chinese (not just Taiwanese) dessert, but instead of being served in a bowl like I’ve had many times before at other places in London, Hong Kong and Malaysia, it was served in a cup “bubble tea” style with a pretty ombre effect. I loved the generosity with the amount of sago they put in, it really gave a nice texture to the drink. The red bean at the bottom was a nice amount too and had kind of a pasty but a little gritty red bean texture. Again I could have done with 30% sugar level instead but even 50% wasn’t as sweet as the other drinks which is probably because the savoury red bean balances the sweetness. I do however, prefer the traditional dessert in a bowl with a spoon, so I probably won’t buy this drink at Yi Fang again.

Overall Thoughts

The drinks at Yi Fang have got to be some of the sweetest I’ve ever tasted, so if you have a sweet tooth this one is for you – I do like sweet things but not as sweet as what I had, so I’ll definitely opt for 30-0% sugar levels where possible next time. The sugar level can’t be changed with the mudflip and winter melon milk but those flavours are so delicious so when I’m in the mood for them next time I might just ask for more ice to water the sweetness down a bit. Usually I’m not much of an ice person, but it seems necessary for these drinks.

My go to drink will definitely be the Fresh Milk Tea with Grass Jelly at Yi Fang and I recommend anyone who likes milk tea to try it – you might wonder why I prefer it over the brown sugar pearl ‘mudflip’ and that’s because I prefer the texture of grass jelly over tapioca pearls but they both taste great, in fact they’re pretty much the same milk tea just with different toppings.

This is going to sound repetitive but I really love how generous they are with their toppings. It’s definitely a lot more than I’ve had at other places. I mean I was pretty disappointed with the topping to drink ratio at The Alley, so it was a nice change at Yi Fang and made the drink feel more worth it.

Additionally, the customer service at the Moor Street branch was excellent, the girl serving me was friendly and polite and made some recommendations for my order. She packaged everything really well for me to prevent leaking. She also gave extra straws so it was easy to share. She gave me a loyalty card with 5 stamps on it for each drink purchased, and also made sure I check that everything is correct before I leave.

Would I go here again? 100% but just need to order the drinks with less or no sugar. In fact, I might go again next week to try their Taro Milk.

Is it worth the hype? I think the ‘mudflip’ hype is worth it, it tastes good and would also look good on instagram if flipped correctly.
